OEM Fixed Position Modules |
These type of readers are ideal for manufacturing processes or supply chain to monitor, manage and direct products on conveyor systems. With the omni directional scanners as well as long range reading these devices are simple to install and extremely cost effective.
There are 4 types of module, CCD, laser, omni and 2D |
|
CCD (or linear imagers) are on average the smallest, lightest and lowest cost type of barcode OEM. Unlike Laser and omni scan engines, the CCD’s have no moving parts and are therefore more durable.
CCD’s are chosen for applications when the key factor is COST for building and maintaining devices. |
|
Laser modules can read at a greater distance this enables the module to set further back in a device and you can use larger printed codes. The lasers decoding speed is higher so more codes can be read at a faster rate and the insensity of the barcode light means it is less affected by bright light and reflection.
Lasers are chosen for applications where large codes are used, where codes are required to move very quickly past the scanner or where there is bright light. |
|
Omni directional modules produce a grid of laser lines designed to account for codes to be read regardless of their orientation. That’s why the majority of in-counter scanners at major super markets use the Omni-direction lasers, to save time not having to position the codes uniformly. The decode speed is also fast so codes can be scanned more consistently when moving.
Omni’s are therefore chosen for applications where the codes are varied in size and shape and/or when untrained users are expected to scan codes. |
|
2D modules use the latest camera technology to decode normal and two dimensional barcodes. 2D barcodes allow a greater amount of information to be stored in a smaller printed area. 2D readers are also able to scan codes directly marked on to metallic and glass surfaces, they can even decode barcode images on mobile phone screens. The camera technology can also read barcodes presented to it in any orientation.
2D modules are chose where 2D barcodes are used, when codes need to be very small/contain larger amounts of data, when untrained users are expected to scan codes and where codes are printed or displayed on unusual surfaces. |
